Earrings.

Cocktail and high jewelry earrings — important stones, matched in pairs and hung so they move. Matching two of anything rare takes longer than finding one, so most of these are made rather than stocked, and nothing here carries a price on the screen. Tell us which pair you are looking at and we will answer you personally.

Ten kinds of earring Matched by hand Price on enquiry

The hub

Ten earrings. Ask about any of them.

These are the ten kinds of earring we make and keep. Each pair is built around its own stones, so what is in the case changes constantly and no two quotes are the same. Pick the one closest to what you have in mind and ask — you will hear back from the shop, with what we currently have and what it would take to make it.

Chandelier earrings

The full-length pair, built in tiers so the whole thing moves with the head. Worn when the earrings are the outfit.

Ask about the weight before you commit. A long pair should feel lighter than it looks.

Drop earrings

One important stone hung below a smaller one, so it swings and catches light every time you turn your head.

A pear or an oval drop is where a coloured stone reads largest.

Statement studs

One large stone sitting flat against the lobe. Quiet from across a room and unmistakable up close.

Above a certain weight a stud wants a secure back. We will show you which.

Diamond hoops

Inside-out, single-row or graduated hoops that throw light from every angle as they turn. The pair most people end up wearing daily.

Diameter changes everything. Try three sizes before you decide.

Cluster & flower earrings

A centre stone ringed by others so the head reads as one large flowering shape, with far more presence than its carat weight.

The best way to get scale on the ear without the weight of one big stone.

Pearl earrings

South Sea, Tahitian and Akoya, as a single pearl on the lobe or hung below a stone. Matched by hand for size, shape and lustre.

Lustre, not size, is what separates a good pearl from an ordinary one.

Estate & vintage earrings

Period pairs that came through the shop and were kept — hand engraving, old cuts, and fittings nobody makes that way any more.

One of a kind by definition. When a pair is gone there is not another.

Convertible earrings

A stud on its own for the day, with a drop that detaches and clips back on for the evening. Two pairs, one purchase.

The drop comes off in a second, and it will not come off on its own.

Heirloom resets

A pair of stones out of clip-ons nobody has worn since the eighties, remade as something you will actually put on.

Nothing is cut or removed until you have seen and approved the plan.

One-of-a-kind commissions

A pair that exists once, drawn around stones you have chosen and made at the bench here. Earrings are the piece people commission most often, because a matched pair of anything unusual has to be built rather than found.

Nothing is quoted until the design is settled, and nothing is made until the quote is.

Start from the stone

Or start with the gem.

Earrings need two stones that agree with each other — same colour, same cut, same life. That is the slow part, and it is why the gem is usually where a pair starts.

Before you enquire

Two things worth knowing first.

Length and fitting are the two questions that come up at the counter every day. Here they are, so your enquiry can start further along.

How long is too long

Measure a pair you already own from the top of the fitting to the very bottom, or hold a ruler against the ear and pick a length. This says where that lands on a face.

— Where it falls

A guide, not a rule. Where a drop actually lands depends on the face and on where the piercing sits, and weight matters more than length — a long pair built well can sit lighter on the ear than a short heavy one. Try a pair on at the counter before you decide.

Earring backs

What actually holds the earring on. It matters more the heavier the pair gets. Tap one.

Post. The ordinary one: a straight post through the ear with a friction back pushed on behind. Fine for light pairs, and the first thing to replace when a stud starts to droop.

After you own it

An important pair needs looking after.

The bench that makes the earrings is the bench that services them. Bring in anything, whoever sold it to you.

Back & prong check

A tired back and a worn prong are how earrings get lost. We look at both under the loupe while you wait.

Changing the fitting

Clip-ons converted to pierced, posts changed to lever backs, and omega clips added to a pair that tips forward.

Cleaning

A proper clean brings a pair back further than most people expect. Ask when you are next downtown.

Grading & appraisal

Independent grading paperwork for a diamond, and appraisals for insurance.

Suite B1, one floor down from Wabash.

No screen tells you how a pair moves, or what it weighs on the ear after an hour. There is a mirror at the counter. Tell us what you are after and we will have those pieces out of the safe and waiting.
